Year 5 is the third year of Upper Primary section, for children aged between nine and eleven.
A combination of the content of the English National Curriculum, the Nigerian Curriculum and the Cambridge Curriculum forms a uniquely blended curriculum integrated with effective teaching styles, successful learning and operative assessment strategies.
The curriculum is not static, however, as the content is reviewed from time to time, taking cognisance of current affairs local and global affairs.
The content of the curriculum is aligned to meet the various learning needs of the children. Learning opportunities take the form of practical activities, group tasks, research work, project-execution and differentiated tasks.
As obtains in other Year Groups, learning goes beyond the classroom in the form of field trips and the use of areas outside the walls of the classroom, with the intention of nurturing the children’s imagination and creativity.
All lessons are suited to meet the various learning needs of the children.
Co-curricular Activities:
As part of our provisions for nurturing well-rounded and responsible pupils, each child in Year 5 is encouraged to take part in the following activities: swimming, taekwondo and Contemporary Dance.
Winners of various competitions for the activities listed, held within and outside the school, often emerge from the Year 5 group. This is due to the emphasis laid on ‘aiming for the stars’ at all times.
Assemblies:
Every session, the Year Group presents a drama piece and a dance on a particular Friday in one of the terms. The theme for the assembly reflects our Core Values of Love, Integrity, Humility, Tolerance, Resilience, and Mutual Respect, as well as the content of the curriculum.
Every child does something during this event and the benefits are enormous! From gaining self-confidence to raising self-esteem, the satisfaction derived from contributing to the success of our assemblies speaks powerfully for the impact of the Year 5 assemblies on the children and their families.
Parental Involvement:
The participation of Year 5 parents is very high, with Year 5 parents fully involved in the learning process of the children. Going beyond attending each Parents’ Discussion Day, parents show full support of all school activities.
Parent-volunteers take up responsibilities like anchoring school programmes, providing resource persons or information on how to get them.
They receive worksheets and other assignments from the class teachers for their children’s use at home, then team up with the teachers to organise an exciting end of year celebration to congratulate the children for all the work they put in throughout the session.
Special Facilities:
Year 5 boasts of a wide range of learning materials from books to visual instructional aids, audio clips and audio-visual aids. The children gain easy access to these and can operate these by themselves, thus facilitating e-learning.
A typical day in the life of a Year 5 child is engaging and enjoyable. There is so much to learn and discover daily. Team spirit, good behaviour and strong academic performance are three of our many achievements in Year 5.
